Brent Barrett's “Christmas Mornings” holiday CD is so beautiful, so it only made sense that the subsequent show of the same name was pretty great. The arrangements, players, a gorgeous duet with Lucas Steele and smart chat were all top-notch, but then there was that VOICE! I saw some actual swooning in the packed houses, which included Larry Gatlin, Julie Wilson (twice!), Karen Ziemba, David Zippell and so many more. We look forward to lots of great singing from BB in the future!
TWO BRENT BARRETT CONCERTS, ONE JASON ROBERT BROWN SHOW, one packed Cast Party…FIVE GOLDEN RINGS…! Wait – that’s not right. But you get the idea. It was showbiz aplenty this past week at Birdland. What a thrill to have one of Broadway’s favorite leading men singing on our stage Sunday and Monday (left - all photos by Stephen Sorokoff). We added a last-minute Jason Robert Brown concert because he was in town for the holidays, and the Birdland phones lit up before we could even make the announcement! It was a sell-out in a matter of nano-seconds, so the room was buzzing even before the first note!
We added a last-minute Jason Robert Brown concert because he was in town for the holidays, and the Birdland phones lit up before we could even make the announcement! It was a sell-out in a matter of nano-seconds, so the room was buzzing even before the first note! Of course Jason didn’t disappoint (left), and brought a great solo show – although he brought two brilliant ‘belting freaks’ with him – Shoshana Bean and Tituss Burgess. (We love those two!) If you missed it – not to worry! He’ll be back for a week this spring. Just watch the Broadway at Birdland schedule!
Two of our favorite Broadway boys, Marc Kudisch and Jeffry Denman (left) came to promote their upcoming holiday shows
The following Cast Party started a little later than usual – but that that didn’t inhibit some amazing talent from showing up! Two of our favorite Broadway boys, Marc Kudisch and Jeffry Denman (left) came to promote their upcoming holiday shows, “Ugly Betty” star David Rasche charmed the crowd, The Bobs showed what acapella is all about, Michael Winther (see ad below) has never been better, Edward Lovett’s group, Figgy Pudding, brought some Christmas cheer, and Elena Bennett & Fred Barton surprised us with an appearance! Designer Malan Breton torched it up, William Blake wailed, and newcomer Kelly Carey made a memorable Cast Party debut – in the best way! There were lots of regulars like Jenna and Joan and Aaron and David and Carolyn and Danielle – with Tedd and Steve on piano and bass. Rocky did our lights and sound, with Gianni and the gorgeous Birdland staff making sure everything went smoothly. Who’s luckier than us?! And we do it all again this coming Monday at 9:30. Wear your holiday finery and join us for the next-to-last last Cast Party of 2009!

BILLY STRITCH'S WATERS OF MARCH: THE BRAZILIAN ALBUM: "...Stritch imaginatively captures the magic of the bossa nova rhythm on some terrific cuts, including three by Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of these, probably the most memorable is "Someone to Light Up My Life," which most Americans first heard on Sarah Vaughan's legendary Brazilian album. Here Stritch captures the simple sensitivity and all the yearning poignancy the composer had in mind when he first penned it. Sergio Mendez's "So Many Stars" takes you on an indolent, dreamy, and gentle journey...[Stritch's] phrasings and delicate nuances are so insightful that the album becomes a powerful musical statement with many subtle, yet potent, moments." -- John Hoglund, Backstage.
