That’s Diana DeGarmo (left, thanks to Jill Sapenoff), who you know from “American Idol,” the cast of Hair and Hairspray! She, along with a fabulous cast, helped raise a lot of money and awareness for victims of the Nashville flood.
HAPPY POST-INDEPENDENCE DAY, EVERYONE!  Hope you enjoyed a firework or two, and aren’t melting in the swealter-fest!  This past Monday was a hot night at Birdland, as always.  The Broadway series featured a hilarious and musically superb evening called “Singin’ In The Shower,” and cast members sang their favorite tunes in full bath-gear, which included towels, robes and a rubber ducky or two!  That’s Diana DeGarmo (left, thanks to Jill Sapenoff), who you know from “American Idol,” the cast of Hair and Hairspray!  She, along with a fabulous cast, helped raise a lot of money and awareness for victims of the Nashville flood.  Many thanks to Bradley d. Gale for bringing us such a fun event!
My old Dallas pal Mollie Welch (photo: Jill Sapenoff)
The following Cast Party showcased an embarassment of talented riches! Our young super-violinist, Jonathan Russell, brought in his pal Nat Wolff, who is one-half of the “Naked Brothers Band,” formerly on the Nickolodeon Network, and currently headlining all over the place.  Not only did they perform “Violin Boy” together, but each dude performed solo for the sold-out crowd.  It was great to see Nat’s parents, the crazily-talented actress Polly Draper and the swingin’ jazz pianist Michael Wolff.  I’ve known them for years – and remember when Nat and his brother Alex were crawling around.  Who knew they were future superstars?!

The Party was loaded with amazing singers, including my old Dallas pals Mollie Welch (left, by Jill Sapenoff), Donna Bullock, Lindsay Holloway, and Cayman Mitchell, Carrie Jackson and Gil Benson, Alexa Aron, Sarah Rice, Samia Mounts, Leah Finnie and Harmony Keeney.  There were, as always, lots of beloved regulars and some spectacular newcomers.  Tedd Firth, Steve Doyle and Dustin Jensen kicked all kinds of ass as the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra, as usual.  We do the whole thing again this coming Monday.  Dust off your upbeat ditties and join us!

And...did you see the great New York Times piece about where performers hang out in their off-hours?  Erik Pieppenberg wrote some great stuff about Cast Party, and included 11 (eleven!) gorgeous photos from the Cast Party archives!  Thanks, Erik, and thanks, as always, to Stephen Sorokoff and Mark Rupp for the photos!  Click HERE to read all about it!

Fresh from her Broadway run of Hair, Annaleigh Ashford returns to Birdland, after her previous sold out performance.  With the musical magic of James Sampliner, she will story-tell through popular classics by everyone from Doris Day to Janis Joplin.  With an emphasis on the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s, Ashford and Sampliner will pay homage to songs like “Mona Lisa’s and Mad Hatters”,  “Beautiful”, “When I’m 64”, and many more.

Annaleigh Ashford is best known for her work on Broadway: Legally Blonde; The Musical - original cast (Margot), Wicked (Glinda), and Hair (Jeannie);  Chicago: Wicked (Glinda); Workshops/Readings: Bring It On (Campbell), Banana Shpeel: Cirque du Soleil, Catch Me If You Can (Brenda), Pal Joey, Black Suits (Megan), MCC.  National tour: Wicked (Glinda u/s). New York: Feeling Electric (Natalie), New York Musical Theatre Festival ’05.  Feature Films: “Sex & the City,” “Rachel Getting Married.”  Television: “Law & Order,” “Legally Blonde; The Musical” on MTV.  Annaleigh is a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College.

James Sampliners' Broadway credits include The Wedding Singer, Brooklyn: The Musical, Never Gonna Dance.  Off-B’way: The Mistress Cycle (NYMF), Ghetto Superstar (music supervisor/orchestrator), Radiant Baby (NYSF). Williamstown: Cabaret & Main, The Threepenny Opera, Where’s Charley?, Tonight at 8:30, Quark Victory, The Mistress Cycle, and the late-night cabaret series.  Regional credits include Mixed Company (NYS&F), Most Wanted (Sundance) Ghetto Superstar (City Theater, Pittsburgh). Recordings include The Wedding Singer, Brooklyn: The Musical: Live!, Billy Porter : At the Corner of Broadway and Soul.  As an arranger and co-writer, he has co-written a new African-American revue of Stephen Sondheim’s music entitled Being Alive with Mr. Porter that has had two productions in Westport and Philadelphia.  The two then worked on an all African-American revue of Richard Rodgers’ material entitled The Soul Of Rodgers for the Reprise Theater Company in Los Angeles.  Today, Mr. Sampliner is now the music supervisor of the national tour of Legally Blonde and works regularly with Mr. Porter, Shoshana Bean and other theater performers.  Mr. Sampliner will be next seen in Atlanta’s Alliance Theater conducting and playing for the new production of Twist directed and choreographed by the legendary Debbie Allen.

BILLY STRITCH'S WATERS OF MARCH: THE BRAZILIAN ALBUM: "...Stritch imaginatively captures the magic of the bossa nova rhythm on some terrific cuts, including three by Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of these, probably the most memorable is "Someone to Light Up My Life," which most Americans first heard on Sarah Vaughan's legendary Brazilian album. Here Stritch captures the simple sensitivity and all the yearning poignancy the composer had in mind when he first penned it. Sergio Mendez's "So Many Stars" takes you on an indolent, dreamy, and gentle journey...[Stritch's] phrasings and delicate nuances are so insightful that the album becomes a powerful musical statement with many subtle, yet potent, moments." -- John Hoglund, Backstage.
